Welcome to the Golden Coast Castle. In Italian, it is the Castello della Costa d’Oro. Just as its beautiful name implies, this historical castle estate offers natural and man-made treasures beyond the imagination.
The location of this property is simply surreal. Situated just above Cambria’s art colony, the 80-acre estate stretches a half-mile down the coast and a mile inland, allowing for exhilarating views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia range. With its rich riparian land, the property is abounding with pinot noir and olive plantings as well as rare Monterey pine forests. Neighboring the famous La Cuesta Encantada or Hearst Castle, the estate is also minutes away from the 280 globally recognized and award-winning wineries of the thriving Paso Robles wine country.
The stunning natural landscape of this estate is matched by breathtaking Venetian architecture and interiors. The main residence of the grand Castello estate boasts recherché finishes including 31 classical and trompe l’oeil mural paintings. The master suite features a world-class spa and two-story vestiary. There is both a professional-grade kitchen and catering kitchen. Amenities include a presidential office suite, home theater and a secret passage that leads to a wine cellar – just to name a few. The residence also lends itself to hosting occasions from the large and grandeur to the intimately small with a magnificent entertainment hall and a soaring pavilion complete with penthouse.

Unique Homes magazine recently sat down with Bob Hurwitz, president of Hurwitz James Company, for a fascinating discussion about the recent trend of foreign investing in the luxury real estate market.
While there are no specific statistics, it’s very clear that the BRIC countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – are leading the way in multi-million dollar, foreign real estate investments. And Bob Hurwitz has seen this first-hand, as Hurwitz James Company has received an influx of inquiries on California listings specifically from potential Russian buyers.
Russian investors have held a prominent role in the upper-end segment of London real estate, but London is now becoming a second choice next U.S. hubs like New York. In fact, there is currently a disproportionate number of Russian buyers in the Manhattan $20 million-plus market. As Founder and CEO of Chase International, Shari Chase, told Unique Homes, “Even though they are strong negotiators, their spending habits are often more spontaneous.”
There are several factors that could be contributing to the recent increased interest in foreign real estate – especially in Europe and the U.S. – among Russian investors. First of all, getting a visa in the U.S. is fairly easy. Second of all, the political climate in Russia has made safe haven cities particularly appealing. Weather is also a factor that is making these U.S. and European cities looks quite glamorous compared to St. Petersburg or Moscow.
Pending contracts and new construction are suggesting that this trend is far from slowing down and will most likely be breaking into the $50 million price point. The Bradbury Estate in the San Gabriel Valley is rapidly making waves in the real estate world. Recently listed by Donald Abbey with president of Hurwitz James Company Bob Hurwitz, the sprawling Palladian Neo-Classical style estate is gaining earnest attention in large part because it has never before been offered for sale and the price tag, no less, is a walloping $78.8 million. But these are not the only factors that are turning the heads of affluent investors and prominent real estate professionals. The recent Los Angeles Times article on the property appropriately bears the headline “$78.8-Million Estate Comes with Trout Pond and Waterfall.”
Indeed, the controlled-temperature trout pond with two-story waterfall is a truly extraordinary amenity unrivaled by any other landscape luxury. It is likely that the future owner of the Bradbury Estate will find a distinct pleasure in having a personal trout-filled pond with its own pumping and cooling system to maintain a constant temperature of 57 degrees.
But while some might be more intrigued by the trout pond than others, any prudent investor can appreciate the exquisite architecture of this crown jewel estate, much of which took nearly 9 years of construction by high-level craftsmen to culminate. Learn more details about the Bradbury Estate by visiting the Hurwitz James Company property profile.

The Razor legacy lives on and, finally, with a new owner! In one of the most expensive home sales in 2 years, The Razor residence in La Jolla, California closed for $14.1 million this week. The purchase of the renowned “Residence of Art“ by Donald A. Burns from broker Bob Hurwitz was finalized late in the afternoon on Tuesday, December 20, 2011. The new owner Donald A. Burns is a 47-year-old real estate investor from Palm Beach, Florida. Here’s an excerpt from the recent Sign On San Diego article featuring an interview with Bob concerning the sale…
“‘The guy is a sophisticated real estate investor,’ said Hurwitz, adding that the sale was the most ‘complex and convoluted’ one he’s ever completed in his 31-year real estate career, given all the players involved.”
As another article in the La Jolla Patch noted, The Razor sale was a long-time coming after three years and several auctions. Donald A. Burns negotiated his way to what ended up being only about one-third of the original asking price. For this magnificent masterpiece designed by Wallace E. Cunningham, an Architectural Digest Top 100 Designer, that includes an infinity pool, rooftop deck and floor-to-ceiling glass for jaw-dropping views from every room, $14.1 million was a small price to pay. After all, according to real estate sources, it was “The most extensively marketed home in the history of residential luxury real estate.”
